Imactable PA6
High strength and hardness make polyamide 6 a popular engineering polymer within the industry. Despite PA6’s high impact strength, it is very brittle, so any impact stress applied to it will result in brittle failure. The behavior is often corrected and improved by using a soft and rubbery phase. The flexible chains in the elastomers absorb the energy entered into the piece when it is hit and prevent crack growth.
For improving impact resistance in polyamides, SEBS, EPDM, and polyolefin elastomers are commonly used. It is necessary to use a coupling agent to connect these two phases because they are incompatible with each other. Resulting in a better bond between the rubber phase and the polyamide. When the rubber phase and coupling agent are added, the viscosity increases, affecting processability.
As a result, Young’s modulus decreases significantly by adding the rubber phase. Rubber particles are prevented from integrating into the melt when the coupling agent is used. It’s important to understand this issue because rubber phase particles’ size plays a crucial role in polymer mixture failure behavior. Particles between 0.2 and 0.4 microns are the critical size for the impact modifier. Cavitation cannot occur if the particle size is too small. Cavitates can occur within particles or at their common boundaries.
