Talc
Talc mineral consists of two sheets of silica separated by a layer or sheet of brucite. The layers are connected by van der Waals forces and can slide over each other. In contrast, this substance has little chemical activity. Talc is commonly used as a filler. This material increases the stiffness of products such as polypropylene, polyethylene, nylon, and polyester due to its lamellar structure.
Types of filler, contents, sizes, interfacial adhesion and surface characteristics of the composite can all significantly affect its final properties. Mineral fillers could adversely affect composite mechanical parameters, for example, when used to modify polypropylene properties. In thermoplastics, talc significantly reduces impact strength, but it usually improves tensile and flexural strength.
The percentage of talc in polypropylene grades containing talc varies from 10, 20, 30, 40, and 50%. These compounds are made from homopolymer and copolymer polypropylene. Compared to unfilled compounds, talc-filled compounds have higher hardness, better surface beauty, low coefficient of thermal expansion, low shrinkage, and improved wear resistance. Adding talc improved HDT temperature and shrinkage, while the flexural modulus increased. Tensile strength is also decreased.
Flexural modulus should be at least 1400 MPa in a high-quality product. It is sometimes necessary to use impact modifiers to maintain impact strength. Nonetheless, the stiffness is reduced. Tensile strength at elongation increases when the copolymer is used in PP/Talc.
